Screenplay Format Basics for Word Processors
based on a paper width of 81/2 inches.
Courier Font @ 12 points is a good, conventional font and size.
Format Document @:
From Top = .75 inches
From Bottom = .50 inches
From Left = 1.50 inches
From Right = .85 inches
Set four (4) tabs:
at 2.5 inches
at 3.4 inches
at 4.5 inches
at 6.6 inches

INT./EXT. LOCATION -- AND TIME
and all Body/Action/Description Copy starts at far Document Left, just as you see it right here, with your already-preset left justify of 1.50.
Separate INT/EXT & Location -- from Time,
with 2 hyphens, with one space on the left & right of the hyphens, again :

CHARACTER╒S
NAMES IN CAPS
ARE FOUND @ TAB
4.5 TO IDENTIFY
WHO SPEAKS DIALOGUE
(paranthetical,)
(like, intonations)
(are left of characters)
(tabbed at 3.25 to 3.5)
Dialogue tab begins @ 2.5...............and
.........doesn╒t exceed between 6.5 or 6.75.
6.5 is probably what you should stay at,
unless you just wanna finish that 10 dollar
word.
Exception to the rule are the brief parenthetical you
find on the same line as the CHARACTER, like:
CHARACTER (v.o.)
CHARACTER (o.s.)
Caps obviously rule for SCENE LOCATIONS, TIME, and CHARACTERS.
Caps are also within Body/Action/Desciption copy (1.5 inches
through 7.5 inches) when a CHARACTER IS FIRST INTRODUCED and/or
DESCRIBED. Caps also rule in the middle of any Body/Action/Copy that require dramatic EMPHASIS, like:
The car SWERVES out of control. The vampire HISSES.
Sally MOANS LOUDLY in the restaurant, feigning an orgasm.
Spacing
Single space between Body/Action/Description Copy
Single space between Character Name, Parantheticals, Dialogue.
Double space between Scene Location/Time and Body/Action Copy
Double space between Body/Action Copy and Characters & Dialogue
Double space between ends of scenes, CUT TO:, and next scene.
Double space between top page numbers and any copy that follows
Double space between any copy at bottom page and CONTINUED:
Record Macros
All are at the furthest tab right at around 6.6 inches:
1.example Page: 90.

1) Page:000. Tab @ 6.6
is the first top line, every time.
Page: is bold, the number is light, with a period.
2) ALL TRANSITIONS: Tab @ 6.6
includes CUT TO: DISSOLVE: FADE OUT: SUPERIMPOSED WITH:
MORPH-ED INTO: JUMP CUT: WHATEVER:
3) CONTINUED: Tab @ 6.6
is the last thing every page sees, at the very bottom line.
with the exception of the last page
4) if you get into Macros,
you╒ll of course find a variety of shortcuts,
like COMMON CHARACTERS NAMES
5) a final thought: SCENE HEADINGS can be preceded by a number:
as in,
1. INT. BEDROOM -- NIGHT
2. EXT. STREET -- DAY
but it usually signifies later or FINAL drafts.
